Sexy Lingerie

The term lingerie is derived from the old French word, linge, which translates to linen.  When it was introduced to the English language it was done so as a euphemism for scandalous clothing.  While sexy lingerie did not become popular in America until the 1850’s it has a long history that dates back centuries.  Lingerie switches with the times and has ranged from simple, elaborate and painful to practical and also feminine and boyish.  No matter what the style lingerie has helped woman feel and look beautiful.

In Ancient Egypt clothing was a status symbol.  Women of higher status usually wore undergarments that woman of a lesser status could not afford.  The under garments were typically thin pieces of cloth that were positioned below the chest and flowed to the ankles.  They were often tied at the waist to show the curves of the body.  These undergarments were the sexiest lingerie available at the time.  Woman who wore them were sought after, not only for their money, but for their gorgeous body figures.

In Greece focus was more on the chest, there were three types of garments that were worn to accentuate the breasts.  The apodesmos was a girdle that was meant to lift the breasts and tighten the waist.  The mastodeton was a band that was used to flatten the bust to make it less noticeable.  The mastodesmos was a band that was worn under the breasts to lift them.   The Romans quickly caught onto these trends and developed versions for their culture as well.  These creations are what led to the creation of modern sexy lingerie, like the push up bra and the corset.

In the middle ages undergarments were worn by royalty to protect their elaborate clothing from their dirty skin.   It was in this era that one of the first pieces of truly sexy lingerie was brought about.  The corset was developed to allow woman to appear as though they had extremely small waists. The corset was worn underneath elaborate gowns and often assisted woman to actually fit in them.  Chemises were also developed at this time for women to wear to sleep or under their petticoats.  Chemises are still widely popular today.

The French Revolution in the 1700’s also brought a change to women’s lingerie.  Woman began to discard their corsets and camisoles.  They began to wear items that were much more comfortable, thinner and sexier.  Many garments were constructed to fit loosely around the body, so it did not constrict it.  Modern sexy lingerie like babydolls, gowns, and chemises are derived from lingerie that was established in this era.

The best lingerie invention was formed in 1913, though it is often not considered sexy lingerie.  A woman by the name of Mary Jacob, better known as Caresse Crosby invented the bra as it is today.  She felt that corsets were too limiting for everyday wear and shortened it to include breasts only.  To enhance this new development the FayeMiss Lingerie Company started producing the infamous wonder bra in 1927.  This bra was designed to lift and support the breasts to create dramatic cleavage for woman of any bust size.

Modernly we have incooperated all of thee historical undergarments in the production of sexy lingerie.  As fashion changes over time, so will the design of lingerie but the same basic concepts will always exist.  There will always be the perfect type of lingerie for all situations, styles and intentions.  Lingerie can be whatever a woman wants it to be as long as they feel sexy and comfortable within it.
